This week’s special activities:

• The students have a 1/2 day of school on Friday.
• End of the second marking period is Friday.
• The Berkshire choir is coming to talk to the 5^th grade on Wednesday.

IN MATH… students are finishing up Unit 5.  We will be reviewing this week Wednesday and Thursday with the test on Friday.

IN SCIENCE…we are continuing our kit of mixtures and solutions.  Students have been problem solving to separate mixtures and solutions. They have worked with Kool-Aid to demonstrate the concept of a diluted or concentrated solution. We will be having a short quiz this Thursday.  

IN LANGUAGE ARTS… in word work this week we are continuing to work on normal word patterns. The word work homework is due on Thursday and test is on Thursday. In reading we are focusing on a character study. The students are using their battle books to conduct the study. They are studying how minor characters affect main characters. They have worked on picking out main and minor characters and then studying how the main character reacts to situations with minor characters. The students will be putting together a character study using Glogster at the end of this unit. 

IN SOCIAL STUDIES…we are finishing Unit 3 on Native Americans and the regions they settled in. The kids studied what natural resources each region had that they used to build houses, clothes and miscellaneous artifacts. There will be a review and test next week.  The specific date will be put in the planners next week. Make sure to check the planner or blog.

Important upcoming events:

• Wednesday, February 2^nd all 4^th and 5^th graders are going to see the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.   
• Friday, February 3^rd is Heritage Day
• Friday, February 3^rd is also the day Berkshire is coming to talk to the kids about registering for classes. The kids will be bringing a sheet home to fill out, with you, about classes they want to take next year.
• Thursday, February 9^th is the parent meeting at Berkshire about general questions and registering for classes. The meeting is at 7:00pm.
