Below are a few professional books that I purchased over the summer that are available for you to check out!

FYI: Our professional literature section has moved to the shelf below on the right, next to the computer lab doors.  (The shelf on the left is reference: dictionaries, almanacs, etc.) Take a little time to browse the other professional books and Lucy Calkins metor texts that are there as well!

Anansi Stories http://blogs.birmingham.k12.mi.us/pembrokemc/2011/06/15/anansi-stories/ http://blogs.birmingham.k12.mi.us/pembrokemc/2011/06/15/anansi-stories/#comments Wed, 15 Jun 2011 18:54:55 +0000 Miss Green http://blogs.birmingham.k12.mi.us/pembrokemc/?p=278 Kindergarten students have been doing a character study by reading Anansi trickster tales by Eric Kimmel. The final story they listened to was Anansi’s Party Time. At the end of the story, Anansi and his friend crab are stuck on the moon! After hearing all of Anansi’s previous adventures, it was now the kindergartners turn to write the next one!

Students partnered up and created their own solution to Anansi’s moon problem using what they already knew about Anansi’s character and his previous predicaments. Students then wrote their stories by illustrating the beginning, middle, and end. On the next Media day, students partnered up again to tell their stories to each other. Finally, each story was scanned onto the computer and each student recorded her story using PhotoStory. Take a look at our new collection of Anansi adventures by clicking on the links below!

Today students drew the beginning, middle, and end scenes of the story we shared, Anansi and the Talking Melon. Take a look at a couple of examples. Can you retell the story?

Book Spine Poems http://blogs.birmingham.k12.mi.us/pembrokemc/2011/04/27/book-spine-poems/ http://blogs.birmingham.k12.mi.us/pembrokemc/2011/04/27/book-spine-poems/#comments Wed, 27 Apr 2011 17:19:44 +0000 Miss Green http://blogs.birmingham.k12.mi.us/pembrokemc/?p=258 April is National Poetry Month! To celebrate, second grade students have been creating poems using the words on the spines of library books. The idea came from the blog 100 Scope Notes and you can read more about them here. Not only has this helped us think about poetry, but we’ve been able to practice using the online catalog, locating library books, and exposing ourselves to new titles. Sometimes our poems are a little silly and a little nonsensical, but they’re all kinds of fun! Take a look at a few examples by clicking on the links below:

It was fantastic to see the many students and families who visited and shopped. We sold over $5,000 worth of books and Pembroke was able to keep some of it to buy new books for our Media Center! What a wonderful way to add new and exciting stories to our library collection!

In the story, a class takes a field trip to a turkey farm and is horrified to learn what happens to turkeys on Thanksgiving! The kids in the story hatch a clever plan to save their new turkey friends. We stopped part way through the story to predict the turkeys’ fate. Click the play button below to hear our predictions! (P.S. Don’t worry~it’s a happy ending but you’ll have to read the story to find out what it is!)
